Welcome to Hollywood!

This is a continuation of my Captain America premiere post. This was meant to go up the next day but nothing ever works as planned....

After the event, I had dinner at one of the restaurants at Highland, one of those food court places.  There was a group of high school students and parents hanging out there also.  They were from Hawaii based on their uniforms and the flower in the hair of one girl.

There was this big guy holding court.  I wasn't paying attention until he said, rather loudly too, "Oh I win at life. Chris Evans waved at me."  Whut?  That got my attention.  His friends were ooh-ing and aah-ing.  The gist of his story was they caught the tail end of the premiere at the balcony of the Dolby Theater (see the last pic I posted in the previous post).  For some reason or another, Chris and another person looked up to that spot and saw them. They waved and Chris waved back.  The dude freaked out.

It was amusing yet rather obnoxious at the same time.  I mean, the restaurant was empty and his voice carried all over the dining room.  When some of his classmates came in, he told them about the premiere downstairs and they nearly ran over a table and a couple of chairs on their rush to the ledge to look.  Loud Dude apparently took pics and when his ate, big sister in Tagalog, came in to look, he showed her and said, "Ate, that is Chris Evans in person."

The ate, note: she's OLDER, what did she do?  She squealed like a stuck pig, "WAAAAAH, it's unfair, I wanna see him in person too.  Mooooom!"  She stomped her feet, pulled at her hair, and walked out.  What in the... hell?

Loud Dude kept keeping on.  "Oh man, wait until I tell the people back in school. I'll definitely be the big shot now.  I mean, they waved at me!  I'm the coolest... I win so much at life."  The guy at the counter was laughing while he prepared someone's Mongolian beef bowl.  I was trying not to roll my eyes.  Loud Dude was walking around as if he owned the place.  He then said, "I cannot wait to watch this movie. Now that I've seen them in person, it'll be so much different."

That last part, I can totally relate.  It took me a whole month before I could watch Generation Kill again after meeting Jon Huertas the first time.  That part, I didn't mind so much.  I felt the same way back in the day.  I still feel it from time to time.

I was keeping a low profile but my ringtone, the Mockingjay whistle, gave me away.  Loud Dude heard it and again, broadcasted that someone in that room is a Hunger Games nerd.  I waved my phone at him.  Maybe his mom noticed that he was beginning to get to my nerves because she told him to sit down and shut his mouth.  He replied, "Mom, I'm just... I win, okay?  Just wait until we watch this movie and I'll win all over again."  He must've felt that I was side-eying him because he gave me a shy smile.

I said, "Oh no, I know the feeling. I totally get you."  Wrong move.  Loud Dude got excited again.  Ugh.

"INORITE?!  I mean, Chris Evans... waved at me!  You know how awesome that is?"

Either I stay silent and let him be or say something and ruin his day.  HAHAHA... I was feeling evil, and elated after the day I just had so I told him, "I do. In fact, I have a picture with him. Chris Evans."  He asked if he could see it so I showed him.

His face fell.  And he then said, "Please, do not show my sister.  She'll hate you."  I was on my way out so that was that.  I had zero intention to steal his thunder but he was borderline annoying.  Man, if you guys were there.

But I sincerely hope he told his friends back home and impressed them.  He was so happy.

Welcome to Hollywood!

The Beatitudes (Matthew 5: 3-12)

I'm not very religious but I have very strong beliefs. I believe strongly in Karma. I was raised a Roman Catholic and in most of my schooling, these Christian beliefs have been in my books, my learning, and my life.  I admit, I never really lived them until recently. The Beatitudes have stuck very close to me in these troubled times and gave me peace of mind.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. And in the end, we will get what we so justly deserve.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
Blesses are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven.

Amen. God bless us all.

Happy LOTR-filled Holidays!

When I watched The Hobbit in 2D back in the Philippines, a handful of people urged me to watch it in 3D.  I will say this again, I am not the biggest fan of 3D.  I haven't watched a lot of them; those that I did watch in 3D, I disliked.  I'm pretty content with 2D plus it's cheaper.

But since coming back to the States - and to be fair, it's The Hobbit... I'll watch it 10 times in the theater if need be - my mom and I decided to IMAX the thing.  I know that the movie is in fact shot in 3D so it should be better than those movies "converted" to 3D.  Oh man, I so want to see it again! In 3D!

(If only the other LOTR movies were shot in 3D.  Just imagine how Legolas' hair would translate.)

Since it was my 2nd time watching it, I focused on specific aspects of the movie.  On the first run, I tend to enjoy it for what it is and judge how faithful it is to the book.  This time around, I got to enjoy the music, the scenery (and remember if I've seen that in the other movies lol), as well as random stuff like where have I seen this actor before and whatnot.  I go even geekier, if that is even possible.  (Yes, it is.)

You are a Lord of the Rings addict if you know which race is coming up next based on the background music.
Indeed.  I have a torrid love affair with Howard Shore's score for LOTR.  Especially the one for all the Rohan scenes.  Even my mom is in on this.  She said that the theme for the elves reminds her of Haldir.  And rightfully so because you can hear it during LOTR:TTT when Haldir and his army of elves lend a hand to Theoden at Helm's Deep.  See, we do have a geek vein in the family.  (Watching LOTR is a bonding activity among the Tenmatay family.)

Anyway, I love the score for this as well.  It's new and different but familiar at the same time.  The dwarves singing a direct passage from the book gave me goosebumps.  How I wish they let Legolas!Orli sing.  Legolas has a crapton of songs in the book.  I can imagine how awkward it would be to see it on screen.  Think... Elessar!Viggo singing at his coronation hahaha.  I never am comfortable watching that.  But I digress.  I love the musical choices in this movie so far.  And good choice in using Tolkien's own words.

And then Christmas came along.  I want to forget this year's Christmas for very personal reasons so I won't even attempt to write about it.  A wonderful thing about it was I counted down to the 25th by rewatching the whole trilogy... extended with audio commentaries!

Not all of it though.  I mean, I wanted an excuse to play my DVDs.  I audio comm'd FOTR and TTT but I only watched the theatrical release of ROTK.  I do have all 3 in the 4-disc format but my ROTK is from a different region.  I think my aunt bought it from another country while the first two were from the US.  It sucks.  I can't play ROTK.  I do have a copy of the extended version on my external HD but I want to go back to DVDs.  Either I buy an ROTK 4-disc with a different region or I buy a multi-region DVD player.  Bummer.

(I used to have all 3 movies in VCD, 2-disc DVD, and 4-disc extended but I gave away my VCD copies to a celebrity I interviewed back in high school.  Brad Turvey, wherever you are.)
The happiest that my Christmas 2012 got.

I never intended to have Tolkien/Peter Jackson to end my year.  It just happened.  After my epic LOTR Christmas marathon (I've decided to make it a yearly thing), my mom and I went to my favoritest place on the planet: Universal Studios Hollywood.  I fcking LOVE this place.  I used to go there all the friggin' time.  But this year, would you believe that December 26 was the first and the final time I went to Universal for 2012?  I fail.  I missed it so much.  I missed people/tourist watching!  And I missed the Studio Tour.  King Kong 3D... I'd go ride that tram over and over just to experience that part of the tour again and again.

As you know, King Kong is directed by Peter Jackson and he had a hand in creating that part of the tour.  The LOTR connection didn't stop there.  Hot Topic was having a Boxing Day sale where all of their shirts were $10.  I got two, one with Gandalf's face and the other one is probably my new favorite tee shirt.

I already wore it yesterday at a post-Christmas party at a friend's house.  I'm not much for quote shirts or merch but I make a few exceptions.  Boromir is one of them.  There was another one that went, "I went to Middle-Earth and all I got is this ring" or something like that.  I was thinking of getting that BUT then I saw this.  This trumps everything.  "One does not simply walk into Mordor"... I dare you not to hear that in Sean Bean's sexy accent.  I also got a keychain of Thorin's key.  ;)  See my wishlist for other LOTR-related wants.  Hahaha!

I also started re-reading The Hobbit.  After some thinking, deciding to drop the book that I was trying to find the interest in reading and digging this one out from the shadows.  If you want to read Tolkien, better start with The Hobbit because it is by far the easiest to read.  And it is funny, too.  Plus if you've seen the movie, the reading will go by much faster.

"Lyrics" to the video above

Is it okay to say that I want to watch the movie again in 3D?  Provided I've seen the first three films more than I could count, I better start with this one now.  Right?  RIIIIGHT?!  ;-)

PS: I don't know if you've noticed bu the supposedly Elvish-made blades such as Glamdring and the Orcist do not glow blue at the presence of orcs and/or goblins in the movie.  Only Sting, Bilbo's sword did.  Glamdring never turned blue in the LOTR movies.

Words of wheeze-dome.

No one is born annoying.
Such words from my great boss.  I don't know where he gets this priceless pieces of bull.  This is actually one of the "better" ones.  At least, if you tilt your head to the side a bit, it makes sense.  Slightly.  I've heard such absurd ones, I don't know whether to agree or laugh.

Speaking of bosses, I feel like I Am the Best by 2NE1 is fast becoming my workplace soundtrack.  I find that I dedicate it more and more to another of my supervisors.  After all, it's his signature line... "Who's the best?!"  Naega jeil jal naga.  I can teach you the choreography of the chorus if you want. ;-)

In happier news... I'll be turning a year older in ten days!

Incompetence

A king, realizing his incompetence, can either delegate or abdicate his duties. -- Marlene Dietrich.

Incompetence does not pick who to strike.  It can be a king, a leader... a boss. Especially in a work place, it is a hassle if you cannot rely on your co-worker(s).  A much bigger pain in the ass if it is your boss that is incompetent.

"Delegate his duties" aka "it should be his job but he passes it on to the first person he sees - usually the busiest - and then takes credit for it."  What's worse, he doesn't tell you how to do it or what exactly he wants.  You're left to figure it out for yourself.  Or he shows you how to do it really fast and expects you to be perfect at it on first try.  That's one example.  The other is far worse.

"Abdicate his duties" or "I don't know what the fuck to do, how to do it, or WHY I need to do it, I just have the money so, by default, I am better than you, therefore, you do as I say."  I'm usually the kind of person to do something first before complaining.  But I have to know the purpose of what I'm doing so that my energy won't go to waste.  It's hard to respect an authority figure when he shows a lack of knowledge and is just plain incompetent.  The way he speaks is dumb, the way he talks to people is condescending.  But even his employees see right through him.  No matter how loud and how fast he talks, he still looks stupid, and I have a hard time respecting him for that.

It is a hard place at work.  I truly enjoy the company of my co-workers and the perks working there give but the bosses are... -_-

Work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence. -- Dr. Laurence J. Peter.

Sincerely,
